UAE Elected As Member Of OIC Water Council To Promote Water Cooperation And Address Scarcity Challenges
The United Arab Emirates, through its Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, took part in the Islamic Conference of Ministers Responsible for Water's fifth session. This event was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Ahmed Mohammed Al Kaabi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Electricity, Water, and Future Energy Sector, led the UAE delegation.
During this conference, the UAE secured a position on the Water Council of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The council is tasked with advancing the OIC's vision regarding water management. It also aims to foster technical, research, and scientific collaboration among member countries.
Ahmed Al Kaabi expressed the UAE's commitment to supporting the OIC's initiatives in tackling water-related challenges. He emphasised efforts to address water scarcity and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which ensures sustainable water and sanitation management for everyone.
Al Kaabi also highlighted the UAE’s comprehensive approach to managing water resources. This includes developing policies related to water security and integrating strategies across sectors like energy, food, environment, and climate neutrality.
The UAE has launched several global initiatives to combat water scarcity. Among these is the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative. Additionally, preparations are underway for hosting the United Nations Water Conference in 2026.
The OIC Water Council envisions a future where all member states enjoy water security. Its mission involves building trust and creating institutional and financial frameworks to demonstrate successful cooperation models that could enhance water security across OIC nations.
Enhancing Cooperation Among Member States
The council aims to establish a cooperative framework that strengthens partnerships between governments, research institutions, educational bodies, private sectors, and civil society groups. This collaborative approach seeks to ensure a secure water future for all OIC members.
The UAE’s active participation in these initiatives underscores its dedication to addressing global water challenges through strategic planning and international cooperation.
