UAE Reinforces Its Fight Against Human Trafficking With New Measures

Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, Minister of Justice, highlighted the significance of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. This day, observed annually on 30th July, aims to raise awareness and foster collective efforts globally and regionally to combat human trafficking and bring offenders to justice.

Al Nuaimi noted that under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE has taken serious steps to eliminate this heinous crime. He described human trafficking as one of the most dangerous criminal phenomena worldwide.

UAE Fights Human Trafficking

He stated, "Acknowledging the evolving nature of the crime and the continuous development of its criminal patterns, the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking has assessed and reviewed the policies and legislative frameworks related to combating this crime. This has helped define a clear roadmap for strengthening the national system with the necessary dynamism and flexibility to address the crime and its developments. The aim is to prevent innocent people, especially children, from becoming victims and to utilise modern technology to monitor crime patterns and receive reports from victims."

The National Committee's efforts resulted in a new law in 2023 targeting human trafficking crimes. This legislation established services for victim protection and imposed strict penalties on offenders. It particularly addressed acts that exploit innocent individuals by confiscating or destroying their identification documents.

The law also emphasised severe penalties for traffickers, especially when children are involved. Al Nuaimi stressed that these measures are crucial for protecting vulnerable populations from exploitation.

Technological Advancements

Following directives from wise leadership, the Ministry of Justice plans to launch an electronic system for referring human trafficking victims. This system aims to protect victims swiftly while preserving their rights and dignity.

Al Nuaimi emphasised that embracing advanced digital technology is essential for reducing bureaucracy and enhancing efficiency in handling such cases.

International Cooperation

Strengthening international cooperation is vital for tackling this transnational crime effectively. Al Nuaimi underscored the importance of solidarity among countries and relevant organisations at both regional and international levels.

This collaborative approach is crucial for reducing human trafficking incidents globally and ensuring justice for victims.

The observance of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to combat this crime. It highlights the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation among nations to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
