UAE Pledges $8 Million To WHO For Health Initiatives In Sudan

In a significant move to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, the United Arab Emirates has pledged US$8 million to the World Health Organisation (WHO). This agreement, signed at WHO's Geneva headquarters, aims to fund essential health initiatives in Sudan, improving conditions for its population.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) formalised this agreement with WHO. Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister for International Development Affairs, signed on behalf of the UAE. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, signed on their behalf, with Lana Zaki Nusseibeh present.

UAE's $8M Aid to WHO for Sudan

This contribution is part of the UAE’s broader commitment to global humanitarian relief. It supports WHO’s efforts in providing essential healthcare services in conflict-impacted regions. The funds will specifically target healthcare infrastructure, emergency response capabilities, and disease prevention programs.

Lana Zaki Nusseibeh stated: "The work done by the World Health Organisation in Sudan is saving lives every day, and we believe it is essential to support this ongoing mission." She added that the UAE and WHO have a long-standing partnership benefiting people in crisis situations throughout the region.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus remarked: "With support from partners and donors, the World Health Organisation will continue to support the urgent health needs of the people of Sudan and the refugees in neighbouring countries. We thank the UAE for this generous pledge. We must act together to protect the lives of the most vulnerable."

Broader Financial Commitment

The UAE's contribution to WHO is part of a larger $70 million commitment dedicated to addressing urgent humanitarian needs in Sudan through UN agencies and other humanitarian organisations. This funding forms a substantial portion of a $100 million pledge made by the UAE in April at the ‘International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Neighbouring Countries’.

This recent donation brings the total amount of aid provided by the UAE to Sudan over the past decade to more than $3.5 billion. The continuous support underscores UAE's dedication to aiding those affected by conflicts and crises globally.

The agreement between MoFA and WHO highlights a collaborative effort aimed at alleviating dire conditions faced by Sudan's population. The focus remains on enhancing healthcare infrastructure and emergency response capabilities while preventing disease outbreaks.

The UAE's financial assistance will bolster WHO’s mission in Sudan, ensuring that critical health services reach those most in need. This collaboration exemplifies how international partnerships can effectively address humanitarian challenges.
