UAE Collaborates With UN Experts To Delve Into The Right To Development
The UAE Permanent Committee for Human Rights (PCHR), in a collaborative effort with the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy, recently hosted a significant event focusing on the draft Covenant on the Right to Development. The gathering, led by Hind Alowais, Director of the PCHR, featured insights from Ambassador Zamir Akram, Chair-Rapporteur of the UN Working Group on the Right to Development, and Professor Koen De Feyter from the University of Antwerp. This event marked a pivotal moment in discussing the intersections of human rights and development within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The discussion delved into the draft Covenant's origins, its conceptual framework, and its core principles, emphasizing its role in advancing human rights. Alowais highlighted the importance of understanding the evolution of the right to development as a fundamental human right closely linked to the broader development agenda. Ambassador Akram reflected on the UN Declaration on the Right to Development as a critical milestone in recognizing development as an inalienable human right. He underscored the necessity for a legally binding declaration to further solidify these principles.

Professor De Feyter emphasized the need for a collective effort among states, international organizations, and corporate entities to achieve genuine human rights protection. The event underscored the UAE's commitment to fostering dialogue and sharing best practices in human rights implementation. By bringing together ambassadors, diplomats, and students, it provided a unique platform for exchanging ideas and reinforcing partnerships aimed at promoting universal human rights.
The collaboration between the PCHR and Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy continues to facilitate important discussions on human rights issues. These events not only contribute to a deeper understanding of complex topics like the right to development but also reinforce the UAE's role in supporting international efforts to protect and advance human rights globally.
