UAE Digital Economy Council Unveils Impressive Digital Adoption Rates
Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, recently highlighted the UAE government's proactive strategy towards fostering a pioneering digital economy. This approach focuses on integrating national skills with technological solutions to bolster the digital economy's contribution to the non-oil GDP in the coming decade. Al Olama emphasized the government's commitment to accelerating digital solution adoption to reinforce the UAE's leadership and competitiveness on a global scale. These remarks were made during his chairmanship of the UAE Council for Digital Economy meeting at the Securities and Commodities Authority in Dubai.
The council deliberated on several strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the UAE's digital economy. These initiatives span various sectors including infrastructure, digital transactions, e-commerce, financial technologies, and investment in digital sectors. A significant focus was also placed on developing digital skills, supporting SMEs, and improving digital economy statistics gathering. The meeting underscored the recent surge in technological solution adoption across the country.

Notably, the use of digital signatures witnessed a 216 percent increase in 2023. Blockchain technology also saw expanded use involving nine banks, six exchange houses, and three insurance companies. Furthermore, federal network digital services have been enhanced to include advanced features like voice-to-text and text-to-voice conversion, emotion analysis, and access to high-performance computing resources for various applications.
Advancements in Internet Infrastructure
The council reviewed developments in government service policies, data centre distribution, cloud computing deployment in Gulf countries, and cloud computing companies within the UAE. Additionally, it discussed the latest internet network indicators and the performance of the fifth-generation network across the country. A significant milestone was achieved with a 50.7 percent adoption rate of the sixth version of the Internet Protocol in January 2024. The UAE also maintained 100 percent mobile network coverage, leading the Middle East in internet exchange traffic and securing a global top position in fifth-generation network speeds in 2023.
The UAE Council for Digital Economy plays a crucial role in implementing the nation's digital economy agenda. It aims to achieve strategic indicators, shape the future of the digital economy, and set its strategic directions within the UAE. Through these concerted efforts, the UAE is steadfastly advancing towards becoming a global leader in the digital economy sector.
