UAE Delegation Engages In High-Level Meetings During Second Day Of UN General Assembly
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) delegation engaged in numerous high-level discussions during the second day of the 79th UN General Assembly. H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, led several bilateral and multilateral meetings with heads of state, government officials, and senior representatives from international organisations participating in UNGA79.
During these meetings, participants explored cooperation opportunities and discussed key topics on the UNGA79 agenda. These included ensuring the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, tackling climate change, enhancing global health and prosperity, and promoting conflict resolution through peaceful means.
Dr. Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to the UAE President, met with Tim Lenderking, US Special Envoy for Yemen, and Geir Pedersen, UN Special Envoy for Syria. Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, along with Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Development Affairs and International Organisations, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Luis Gilberto Murillo, Colombia's Minister of Foreign Affairs. This MoU involves donating a hospital to La Guajira in Colombia to reduce child malnutrition mortality.
Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak Al Shamsi participated in discussions on adapting to rising sea levels and financing resilience efforts. She also attended an event focused on "Galvanising Momentum for the Global Plastic Pollution Instrument." Meanwhile, Sheikh Shakhboot Bin Nahyan Al Nahyan took part in events like "United for Peace in Sudan" and "Unstoppable Africa: the Global Africa Business Initiative (GABI)," hosted by the UN Global Compact.
The UAE announced its membership as the first MENA country in the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy. This group advocates sustainable ocean management. Razan Al Mubarak represented the UAE at this meeting due to her roles as President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion from COP28.
Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh and Dr. Maha Barakat joined a Leaders’ Summit addressing synthetic drug threats hosted by US President Joe Biden. The UAE reaffirmed its commitment to combating this crisis through a new initiative with Canada aimed at expanding public health interventions.
Regional Cooperation Initiatives
Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar participated in joint meetings between the US and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. He also attended GCC meetings with Benelux countries and Nordic Co-operation members. Additionally, he marked the 20th anniversary of the NATO-Istanbul Cooperation Initiative.
Sultan Al Shamsi engaged with senior officials from the Group of 77 and China while meeting Feraye Ozfescioglu from the World Humanitarian Forum. Omran Sharaf delivered opening remarks at a Digital for Sustainable Development event and participated in discussions at the Paris Peace Forum about securing transnational critical infrastructure.
Advancing Security and Sustainability
Salem Al Jaberi attended a ministerial meeting focused on supporting victims of terrorism as part of the Group of Friends initiative. Abdulla Balalaa contributed to discussions on Climate Finance Reform Compass aimed at advancing global climate finance goals established during COP28 held in Dubai.
Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan Al Nahyan met with CEOs from international companies to foster cooperation through her role as President and CEO of UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators.
The UAE's active participation at UNGA79 highlights its commitment to addressing global challenges through collaboration across various sectors including health care provision in Colombia or tackling synthetic drug threats alongside Canada while maintaining focus on sustainable development initiatives worldwide.
