UAE Cyber Security Council Warns Of Over 12,000 Wi-Fi Breaches Recorded This Year
The UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC) has highlighted the dangers of using open and untrusted public Wi-Fi networks. Since the start of this year, over 12,000 breaches have been recorded through such networks in the UAE. These incidents make up about 35% of all cyberattacks reported in the country, showing how hackers are increasingly targeting users through vulnerable Wi-Fi connections.
Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security for the UAE Government at the CSC, stated that under the guidance of wise leadership, the UAE is committed to creating a secure cyber environment. This effort aims to protect users from growing digital threats while keeping up with technological advancements. He noted that these initiatives are part of a broader national vision to enhance trust in the country's digital ecosystem and promote cybersecurity awareness.

The Council warned that free Wi-Fi can expose personal data, making it crucial to adopt advanced protection measures like using reliable VPN applications. Hackers often target passwords, banking details, and personal information through these insecure networks. The Council stressed the importance of vigilance when connecting to free or unsecured Wi-Fi networks.
Many users are unaware of the risks associated with connecting to free Wi-Fi networks in public places like cafes and airports. Although convenient, these networks are often not secure enough, making them easy targets for fraud and hacking activities. The Council emphasised adopting safe practices such as avoiding sensitive transactions and enabling multi-factor authentication.
The Cyber Security Council outlined three key steps for staying safe on public networks: use a reliable VPN application to encrypt your connection; activate "Safe Browsing" features in browsers; and avoid logging into sensitive accounts on open Wi-Fi networks. These measures help protect against unauthorised data interception.
The Council's awareness message highlighted that using a reliable VPN not only ensures privacy but also protects digital identity in an interconnected world prone to breaches. Awareness is considered the first line of defense against cybercrimes, emphasising well-thought-out preventive steps as essential.
Cyber Pulse Awareness Campaign
The Cyber Pulse awareness campaign by the CSC returns for its second year on social media. This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to build a secure cyberspace that shields users from increasing digital risks while keeping pace with rapid technological advancements. It is part of a comprehensive national vision promoting cybersecurity awareness and safe browsing culture.
The Council urged individuals and institutions to remain cautious when connecting to free or unverified Wi-Fi networks. Secure measures like multi-factor authentication, VPN usage, and regular software updates are recommended to safeguard data effectively.
In addition to stealing data, hackers can use open networks to read transmitted information, redirect users to fake websites, intercept phone calls, or install malicious software without user knowledge. The Council's guidance aims at increasing cyber awareness among both individuals and institutions.
