UAE Customs Reports Significant Growth With 40 Million Transactions Completed In 2024

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security highlighted the crucial role of "UAE Customs" in ensuring community safety and economic growth. By facilitating trade and managing customs risks, they combat smuggling and protect borders. Their efforts also include countering money laundering and terrorist financing, enhancing international cooperation, and supporting the UAE's prosperity.

Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of the Authority, noted that "UAE Customs" has developed advanced customs systems. These systems have achieved significant results in digital transformation and operations. He stated this on International Customs Day, celebrated annually on 26th January. The focus is on operational efficiency and security while boosting economic growth.

UAE Customs Completes 40 Million Transactions

Ahmed Abdullah bin Lahej Al Falasi, Acting Director General of Customs and Port Security, reported a significant increase in customs transactions in 2024. Compared to 2023, there was a 49% rise, reaching approximately 40 million transactions from 26.8 million the previous year. This reflects the success of "UAE Customs" in improving processes through technology.

The compliance rate with procedures outlined in the Customs Procedures Manual reached 100% in 2024. The average customs clearance time nationwide was reduced to just five minutes. This efficiency is attributed to innovations in customs systems and effective risk management.

"UAE Customs" has focused on enhancing supply chain security by combating smuggling attempts and promoting innovation. They aim to attract capital and investment while simplifying procedures using advanced inspection devices. Collaboration with strategic partners both locally and internationally strengthens their operations.

Al Falasi emphasised the importance of customs seizures in maintaining community security. In particular, they target drug smuggling that affects UAE youth. In the past year alone, there were approximately 15,866 seizures with around 276 inspection missions conducted at customs ports across the country.

Advanced Systems for Risk Management

"UAE Customs" employs sophisticated systems for identifying customs risks by analysing shipment data to detect suspicious activities requiring detailed inspections. They collaborate with global customs departments to exchange information about criminal networks involved in smuggling operations.

The use of trained customs dogs for inspections has expanded alongside enhancing personnel efficiency through training programs. Additionally, they have met Financial Action Task Force (FATF) requirements related to combating money laundering with full compliance.

Progress on Key Projects

The completion of the "Afhas" system for cash declarations by travellers marks a transformative project for the Authority. Furthermore, progress on implementing the "UAE Customs Platform" project reached 60.7%, while the Border Security Ports project achieved a completion rate of 74%.

"UAE Customs" continues its commitment to innovation by updating procedures and developing services that enhance data-driven operations using analytical tools. They utilise state-of-the-art inspection devices while collaborating with partners within and outside the country.

The achievements of "UAE Customs" underscore its vital role in safeguarding community security against smuggling attempts targeting vulnerable groups like youth or involving hazardous materials or illicit trade activities such as money laundering or terrorism financing through trade channels.
