UAE Crown Prince Represents President At Pope Francis's Funeral In Rome
H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, attended the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome. He represented His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. The event was also attended by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Saif Saeed Ghobash, and Maryam Eid AlMheiri.
The funeral commenced at Saint Peter's Square, with the burial held at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major. Numerous heads of state, global leaders, and dignitaries were present to pay their respects. H.H. Sheikh Khaled extended condolences from the UAE President to Cardinal Kevin Farrell and Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re.
Pope Francis was renowned for fostering intercultural and interfaith dialogue. His visit to the UAE marked a significant milestone as it was the first papal visit to the region. During this visit, he signed the Human Fraternity Document with Professor Ahmed Al-Tayeb on 4 February 2019 in Abu Dhabi.
This document became a global symbol for peace and coexistence. It was later recognised by the United Nations General Assembly, which declared 4 February as the International Day of Human Fraternity. This initiative continues to inspire efforts towards tolerance and mutual understanding worldwide.
H.H. Sheikh Khaled expressed deep sympathies to the College of Cardinals, the Holy See, and Catholics worldwide on Pope Francis' passing. He highlighted that Pope Francis was a beacon of human fraternity and cultural coexistence whose humanitarian legacy will inspire future generations.
