Al Shawwaf Forum on Crescent Sighting in UAE

The forum's primary goal is to improve coordination with relevant authorities. By doing so, it aims to unify national perspectives on crescent observation and verification according to global best practices. This initiative seeks to ensure both Sharia and scientific precision in preparation for Ramadan 1446 AH – 2025 AD.

With a focus on future advancements, the forum intends to establish innovative Sharia and scientific solutions for crescent sighting governance. Additionally, it aims to bolster the UAE’s leadership in astronomical observation and lunar calendar systems. The event will also feature an exhibition highlighting the UAE’s cultural heritage linked to crescent sighting traditions.

The term ‘Al Shawwaf’ has deep roots in Emirati culture. Historically, it described individuals known for their exceptional eyesight and sharp vision. In local heritage, these individuals were responsible for observing and tracking the crescent moon. Their role was crucial in confirming its sighting, marking the start of a new lunar month.

This forum represents a significant step towards enhancing the UAE's role in astronomical observation. By integrating cultural heritage with modern practices, it aims to create a comprehensive approach to crescent sighting. The event promises to be a platform for exchanging knowledge and fostering partnerships at both local and regional levels.
