UAE's Ongoing Commitment To Ocean Protection And Sustainability By Amna Al Dhahak

The UAE remains dedicated to safeguarding ocean ecosystems, emphasising their sustainability as a crucial resource globally and nationally. Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, highlighted this commitment on World Oceans Day. She noted the oceans' significance in regulating climate and supporting life but acknowledged the challenges they face.

Dr. Al Dahak stated, "Covering more than 70 percent of the Earth's surface, our oceans are undeniably essential to human lives and livelihoods. They are the lifeblood of our planet, regulating our climate, providing sustenance, and supporting countless ecosystems. We recognise, however, that our oceans face unprecedented challenges. From the impacts of climate change, evidenced by coral bleaching and rising sea levels, to the pressures of unsustainable fishing practices, the health of our oceans is at risk."

UAE's Commitment to Ocean Sustainability

The minister emphasised the UAE's proactive role in addressing these issues due to its deep connection with the sea. The nation is implementing strategies to counteract threats and rejuvenate marine ecosystems for future generations. This includes efforts in mangrove preservation and coral rehabilitation.

Dr. Al Dahak continued, "This year, World Oceans Day is being celebrated under the theme "Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us", a theme that resonates deeply with the UAE's vision for a sustainable future. It reminds us of the awe-inspiring beauty and immense value of the sea and underscores the urgent need to protect it from the threats of pollution, overfishing, and climate change."

The UAE's dedication extends beyond its borders through international cooperation in ocean protection. Dr. Al Dahak highlighted that it is the first Middle Eastern country to join the '100% Alliance.' This UN initiative encourages coastal states to manage all ocean areas sustainably under their jurisdiction.

She added that ongoing projects aim to plant over four million coral colonies in local waters by 2030. Additionally, there is a target to plant 100 million mangroves by 2030. These initiatives are crucial for restoring marine biodiversity.

Encouraging Public Involvement

Dr. Al Dahak urged individuals to become advocates for ocean conservation by making informed seafood choices and reducing plastic use. She encouraged support for organisations dedicated to preserving marine environments.

"On this World Oceans Day," she said, "I urge each of you to become an ocean advocate. Learn about sustainable seafood choices. Reduce your plastic consumption. Support organisations dedicated to ocean conservation."

The minister concluded by encouraging everyone to instil a love for oceans in children and teach them about marine wonders. Every small action contributes significantly towards revitalising ocean vibrancy.
