UAE Highlights Commitment To Global Energy Security And Renewable Initiatives At BRICS Meeting

Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, represented the UAE at the BRICS Energy Ministerial Meeting in Brasília. He highlighted a crucial period in global energy transition, emphasising the dual challenge of ensuring secure and affordable energy while reducing emissions to meet climate goals. For the UAE, this is seen as an opportunity for transformation through innovation and collaboration.

Al Olama proudly noted that the UAE has achieved 100 percent access to electricity and clean cooking solutions. The country also provides affordable heating and cooling services, ranking first globally in energy access and affordability indicators. However, he acknowledged that their work continues until these achievements are universal. The UAE is investing in renewable energy projects across over 70 countries, focusing on Africa, the Caribbean, and small island developing states.

UAE Commits to Global Energy Security at BRICS

The UAE has invited BRICS nations to join the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance. This initiative aims to reduce carbon intensity by advancing efficiency standards and supporting joint capacity-building. Through this alliance, BRICS members can significantly contribute to global energy savings and decarbonisation efforts.

Additionally, Al Olama mentioned the UAE's connection with other GCC states via the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA). This enhances regional grid stability and energy security. The UAE is actively pursuing partnerships to deepen regional and global energy integration.

A notable collaboration is with India, aiming to establish a direct power interconnection. Both countries are also involved in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), which seeks to boost economic cooperation and clean energy deployment between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

The Brazilian Presidency presented a report on BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform (ERCP) during the meeting. It focuses on ensuring access to affordable, reliable energy for underserved communities. Additionally, a roadmap for BRICS Energy Cooperation from 2025-2030 was discussed, outlining strategies for clean energy advancement.

The UAE remains committed to cross-border energy trade and global security through these initiatives. By sharing models on energy financing and technology deployment, they aim to support global energy justice.

Al Olama concluded by stating that "The UAE has made energy access a national achievement." He reiterated their commitment to sharing successful models with other countries to promote equitable access worldwide.
