UAE Circular Economy Council Reviews New Proposals For Sustainable Resource Management In 2021-2031 Policy

The UAE Circular Economy Council recently convened its first meeting since its restructuring, led by Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy. The session focused on advancing the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031, aiming to boost sustainability and resource efficiency. Discussions centred on unifying national efforts to transition towards a sustainable circular economy model.

A key topic was the 'Aluminium Recycling Coalition', which seeks to transform aluminium recycling in the UAE. The council stressed completing the initial set of policies and progressing to the next phase. Bin Touq highlighted that under wise leadership, the UAE prioritises developing a circular economy ecosystem through national policies and strategies aligned with the "We the UAE 2031" vision.

UAE Council Discusses Circular Economy Plans

Bin Touq stated, "Today’s meeting represents an important milestone in accelerating the country’s transition to a new economic model based on knowledge and innovation, with the circular economy being one of its main pillars." He emphasised integrating innovation and digital transformation into initiatives and enhancing dialogue with government entities and the private sector for implementing the National Circular Economy Agenda.

The council reviewed significant achievements in adopting a circular economy model, including incorporating it into Investopia Summit's agenda. This summit has been pivotal in showcasing global investment opportunities and fostering sustainable partnerships in manufacturing, green infrastructure, and transportation sectors. Over 2022-2023, four meetings were held to support these goals.

Following the meeting, Bin Touq inaugurated the ‘Landmark CircuLife’ textile recycling facility. This initiative by Landmark Group is a pioneering project in the UAE and regionally. It underscores the UAE's commitment to green growth through public-private partnerships, reinforcing its leadership in circular economy principles.

The facility uses advanced recycling technologies for fibre recovery and customer engagement initiatives. It can process over 200,000 tons of textile waste annually, diverting 90% from landfills. This reflects a significant step towards reducing environmental impact through innovative solutions.

Commitment to Sustainable Practices

Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan noted: "As we reach the midpoint of our 10-year strategy, this milestone offers us an opportunity to both celebrate our achievements and recalibrate our approach where needed." She stressed that while progress is promising, achieving future targets requires greater commitment and accountability.

Renuka Jagtiani of Landmark Group remarked: "At Landmark Group, we believe that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that cannot be achieved in isolation." She highlighted their decade-long journey towards sustainability starting with Splash’s sustainable collection and ongoing efforts across product lifecycles to reduce environmental impact.

This meeting marked an essential step in aligning efforts towards a sustainable future for the UAE. By focusing on innovative solutions like aluminium recycling and textile waste processing, the nation aims to solidify its position as a leader in circular economy practices globally.
