UAE-China Diplomatic Relations Celebrated At Dubai Forum Marking 40 Years Of Partnership

The Dubai Forum celebrated 40 years of diplomatic ties between the UAE and China. Leaders from various sectors gathered to explore new ways to enhance cooperation. The event was organised by the Chinese Consulate General in Dubai, the Government of Dubai Media Office, the China Public Diplomacy Association, and Dubai Chambers. Over 400 representatives from political, business, academic, and media sectors attended.

Zhang Yiming, Chinese Ambassador to the UAE, highlighted that relations between the two countries are at their strongest. He mentioned that recent visits by President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to China and Li Qiang, Premier of China's State Council, to the UAE have reinforced this partnership. The collaboration spans advanced manufacturing, digital economy, AI, new energy, biopharmaceuticals, and investment.

Dubai Forum Celebrates 40 Years of UAE-China Ties

Ou Boqian, Consul-General of China in Dubai, noted that the forum marks a milestone in UAE-China relations. The partnership has grown stronger across various sectors over 40 years. The forum aims to accelerate cooperation in energy, media, and youth empowerment. This strong partnership positions both nations well to tackle global challenges and contribute to sustainable growth.

China is the UAE's largest trading partner; conversely, the UAE is China's top non-oil trading partner in the Arab world. In early 2024 alone, trade between them exceeded $50 billion. This figure is expected to surpass $100 billion by year-end. Looking ahead, Zhang Yiming emphasised aligning development strategies for mutual growth opportunities.

Mona Al Marri from GDMO remarked on the forum's role in fostering UAE-China collaboration through shared values. She stated that new media technologies could enhance cultural understanding globally. As both nations invest in advanced technologies, these efforts support dynamic partnerships.

Focus on Sustainable Development

Mohammad Ali Rashed Lootah of Dubai Chambers highlighted both nations' commitment to sustainable development and leadership cultivation. As Dubai grows as a global hub for economic cooperation and innovation, Dubai Chambers remains dedicated to fostering partnerships for commercial growth and entrepreneurial dynamism.

Wu Hailong of the China Public Diplomacy Association said that this forum sets new goals for future cooperation. He noted that discussions provided valuable insights for promoting mutual growth while tackling global challenges together. Opportunities for deeper collaboration will strengthen global influence and benefit people in both countries.

Key Sessions at the Forum

Session I on 'New Energy' focused on green transformation and sustainable development strategies like those discussed at COP28. Session II titled 'New Generation', explored empowering youth through cross-cultural engagement and leadership development platforms.

During Session III on 'New Media', Maryam Al Mulla from Dubai Press Club emphasised media's role in bridging cultures and promoting international cooperation. She stated that media transcends geographical barriers in this digital age. New media can strengthen UAE-China partnerships through shared stories.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment to deepening bilateral ties by leveraging new opportunities for future cooperation in areas shaping both nations' progress.

In recent years, non-oil trade between the UAE and China reached AED296 billion ($81 billion) in 2023—a 4.2% increase from last year—making China the UAE's top non-oil trade partner responsible for 18% of imports. The UAE actively participates in China's Belt and Road Initiative launched in 2013 further reinforcing economic ties between them.
