UAE-China Calligraphy Forum Showcases Cultural Ties At Mohammed Bin Rashid Library
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Library recently hosted the second UAE-China Forum. This event, in collaboration with the Emirates Society for Arabic Calligraphy and Islamic Ornamentation and the Chinese Embassy in the UAE, celebrated 40 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The forum aimed to deepen cultural and intellectual connections between the UAE and China.
Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr, Chairman of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library Foundation, emphasised the importance of this forum. He stated that it reflects the UAE's dedication to enhancing ties with China. "The Arab and Chinese civilisations share rich artistic traditions, particularly in calligraphy, which is regarded in both cultures as a refined and symbolic art form," he said.

Khalid Al Jallaf, Chairman of the Emirates Society for Arabic Calligraphy, highlighted how this forum aligns with the UAE's cultural strategy. He noted that it underscores art's role in promoting dialogue, tolerance, and mutual understanding. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to build international partnerships through cultural exchange.
Ou Bo Qian, Consul General of China in Dubai, spoke about Chinese calligraphy's significance. She described it as a medium that unites philosophy, aesthetics, and spirit. "Just as Arabic calligraphy reflects faith and wisdom, Chinese calligraphy captures the rhythm of time and history," she said.
The forum featured exhibitions, workshops, and seminars focusing on Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation. These activities provided a platform for artistic exchange between the two cultures. They also supported efforts to strengthen cooperation between the UAE and China in arts, heritage, and knowledge exchange.
Cultural ties have become a cornerstone of bilateral relations between these countries. Both nations regularly host exhibitions, literary events, and heritage festivals to promote mutual understanding. The forum reinforces the UAE's vision of using cultural diplomacy as a tool for global dialogue.
Expanding Literary Horizons
Al Murr pointed out that past cultural exchanges often centred around Europe. However, China's economic rise over three decades has changed global perspectives. He called for more translations of Chinese literature into Arabic and vice versa to enhance cultural understanding.
The strategic partnership between the UAE and China is based on mutual respect and openness. This long-standing relationship is reflected in their shared commitment to arts and culture. The forum serves as a testament to their ongoing collaboration in these fields.
The event not only celebrated 40 years of diplomatic relations but also highlighted future opportunities for cooperation. By fostering dialogue through art and culture, both nations aim to strengthen their ties further.
