UAE Children's Digital Wellbeing Pact Signed To Enhance Online Safety For Children
The UAE has introduced a significant initiative to safeguard children in the digital realm. During the World Government Summit in Dubai, key figures like H.H. Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Omar bin Sultan Al Olama witnessed the signing of the UAE Children’s Digital Wellbeing Pact. This pact aims to create a safer online environment for children, addressing issues like harmful content and cyberbullying.
H.H. Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan emphasised that protecting children online is a collective duty involving various sectors. He stated, "Protecting children in the digital world is a shared responsibility that requires efforts between various sectors to ensure that we provide a space that balances freedom of access to information with ensuring the safety of children from electronic risks." The pact aligns with national goals to foster a secure digital space for future generations.
The Digital Wellbeing Council and Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority facilitated this first-of-its-kind pact in the region. It involves strategic partners such as the Ministry of Interior's Office of International Affairs, Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, and others. Prominent tech companies like Snapchat, Meta, Google, TikTok, X, Yango, Samsung, e&, and du have joined as members.
H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan highlighted the importance of enhancing children's digital quality of life. He stated that ensuring their online safety contributes to building a secure society that uses technology positively. By providing safe access to information and educational resources, children can learn and innovate without facing technological misuse risks.
Snap Inc.'s Regional Head for Middle East and Africa, Jawaher Abdelhamid, expressed pride in leading the pact's development. She said, "At Snap, we share a deep responsibility to continually strive toward creating a safe experience for our users - particularly the youngest ones." The pact aims to enhance collaboration among partners to uphold high digital safety standards for children.
The pact also focuses on protecting children's data by promoting transparency through regular reporting and evaluation based on global practices. It seeks to reduce harmful content exposure by developing strategies tailored for different age groups. Additionally, it supports digital literacy programs for children and parents to navigate online spaces safely.
