UAE And Brazil Celebrate 50 Years Of Diplomatic Ties With High-Level Visit

Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, led a delegation to Brazil to enhance bilateral cooperation. This visit marked 50 years of diplomatic relations between the UAE and Brazil, established in June 1974. Over the decades, this relationship has grown into a strong strategic partnership across political, economic, and cultural domains.

The UAE’s participation in the G20 is significant, marking its fifth involvement since the Group's inception. As a guest country, the UAE supports the Brazilian Presidency’s priorities and initiatives. This participation underscores the UAE’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and international priorities across various sectors. The UAE aims to support global agendas while forming partnerships that benefit the international community and future generations.

Both nations are committed to addressing climate change challenges under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). They are working together on environmental initiatives through the ‘Troika’ initiative launched in February 2024 in Dubai. This initiative ensures collaboration between COP28 in 2023, COP29 in Azerbaijan in 2024, and COP30 in Brazil in 2025. The focus is on enhancing climate action to keep global warming within 1.5°C.

During her visit, Al Hashimy attended a productive meeting with Mauro Vieira, Brazil's Minister of Foreign Affairs. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership and explored new areas for cooperation. Al Hashimy praised ongoing efforts between the UAE and Brazil to combat climate change and expressed optimism about future joint initiatives.

Over the past five decades, the UAE and Brazil have built a robust partnership marked by significant economic ties and strategic cooperation on global issues. This relationship is evident in expanding trade and investment ties, especially in energy, climate change, and infrastructure sectors. Both nations emphasised their leadership's dedication to strengthening economic cooperation for mutual growth and prosperity.

Al Hashimy also participated in the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting of the Development Working Group during her visit. Saleh Al Suwaidi, UAE Ambassador to Brazil and G20 Sous-Sherpa, led the delegation at the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty Taskforce. These platforms provide opportunities to discuss joint initiatives aimed at addressing global development challenges and advancing poverty eradication.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

During her intervention at the Fighting Inequalities and Trilateral Cooperation Session of the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting, Al Hashimy stated: "We cannot advance and maintain sustainable development without seriously addressing inequality." She stressed acknowledging inequality's root causes at all levels is necessary for different outcomes.

On the sidelines of the G20 Development Meeting, Al Hashimy met with several international leaders including Dr. Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman from Singapore; Ahmed Hussen from Canada; Anne Beathe Tvinnereim from Norway; Scenaider Siahaan from Indonesia; Stefano Gatti from Italy; and Cindy McCain from WFP. These meetings aimed at fostering international cooperation on various development issues.

The visit concluded with both nations reaffirming their shared commitment to deepening their bilateral partnership across various sectors significantly. They pledged continued close collaboration for mutual benefit aiming for growth, prosperity, and mutual benefits for another 50 years and beyond.
