SWIFT User Group Drives Payment Innovations In UAE's Banking Sector

The Steering Committee and National SWIFT User Group in the UAE recently convened for their regular meeting. Chaired by Jamal Saleh, Director General of UAE Banks Federation and Chairman of the SWIFT User Group Steering Committee in the UAE, the meeting focused on reviewing the progress of the current year's action plan and activities.

The committee approved the minutes of the previous meeting and praised efforts supervised by the Central Bank of the UAE. These efforts aim to improve payment processes and enhance the efficiency and security of the banking transfer system, reinforcing the UAE's status as a global financial and trade hub.

UAE Banks Boost with SWIFT

The meeting highlighted initiatives by the UAE Banks Federation and discussed outcomes from the recent annual SWIFT Conference held in the UAE. These initiatives are crucial for achieving goals set by the "National Payment Systems Strategy" launched in 2019. The strategy aims to develop innovative payment solutions, enhance customer experiences through an instant payment platform, and strengthen the UAE's position in digital advancement.

Jamal Saleh commented on the significance of these initiatives: "Since its establishment in 2021 as the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, the steering committee and National User Group for SWIFT have played a vital role in improving payment operations and enhancing banking transfer system efficiency."

Role of Steering Committee

Saleh emphasised that the Steering Committee provides a platform for exchanging views and insights that support decision-making. It leverages knowledge from SWIFT's global network members to develop banking practices and enhance professional capabilities in the UAE's banking sector through various events.

"The initiatives contribute to enhancing financial ecosystems, fostering local business environments, strengthening cooperation, streamlining payment processes, and driving digital transformation," Saleh added. These efforts align with policies set by the Central Bank of the UAE to develop secure and efficient payment systems.

Strategic Goals

Saleh also highlighted the role of the Steering Committee in achieving strategic goals such as doubling non-oil foreign trade. Efficient payment systems are crucial for facilitating trade exchanges. He acknowledged contributions from SWIFT User Group Steering Committee members, who possess extensive experience and knowledge in banking, supporting banks in adopting best practices and advanced technologies for payment operations.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue working towards enhancing payment processes, ensuring security, and maintaining efficiency in banking transfers. The committee aims to support ongoing digital transformation efforts to meet evolving needs in the banking sector.
