UAE And Azerbaijan Presidents Discuss Cooperation Within Framework Of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met His Excellency Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, at Qasr Al Shati in Abu Dhabi during a working visit, where both leaders reviewed bilateral relations, discussed expanding cooperation, and explored new projects in economic, investment, development, and renewable energy sectors.

The discussions also addressed regional stability and opportunities that support national development strategies in both countries, with the two presidents aligning views on strengthening joint initiatives, enhancing coordination through existing partnership frameworks, and using cooperation projects to support long-term growth in key sectors that are important for the UAE and Azerbaijan.

Within the broader Comprehensive Economic Partnership and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the UAE and Azerbaijan, the meeting included the announcement of a Letter of Intent on defence cooperation, along with a Memorandum of Understanding creating a twinning arrangement between the Department of Municipalities and Transport – Abu Dhabi and the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.

The defence Letter of Intent signalled plans for deeper coordination in security-related fields, while the municipal twinning between Abu Dhabi and Baku aimed to encourage knowledge sharing in urban planning, infrastructure development, and public services, reflecting how UAE-Azerbaijan cooperation is expanding beyond trade into institutional and city-level collaboration.

The two presidents also discussed the recent announcement of the 2026 Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, which recognised the historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia as a global example of reconciliation and a major step towards resolving long-running conflicts through dialogue, mutual understanding, and diplomatic engagement.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan congratulated President Ilham Aliyev, describing the Zayed Award as a recognition of the wisdom shown by Azerbaijan and Armenia in reaching an agreement that opens a path for peace, cooperation, and stability between them and across the wider Caucasus region, benefiting all peoples there.

UAE-Azerbaijan cooperation in diplomacy and official participation

President Ilham Aliyev praised the efforts and goodwill initiatives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, highlighting the UAE’s diplomatic role in promoting peace, stability, and security on both regional and global levels, which aligns with the broader direction of UAE-Azerbaijan cooperation in international affairs.

The meeting included several senior UAE officials and members of the Azerbaijani delegation, reflecting the high-level nature of UAE-Azerbaijan cooperation discussions and the wide scope of topics addressed, from defence and energy to city management and regional peace-building efforts linked to the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity.

Earlier in the day, President Ilham Aliyev arrived in the UAE for the working visit and was received by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and a number of senior officials, underscoring the importance that the UAE attaches to relations with Azerbaijan.

The overall talks underscored the shared interest of the UAE and Azerbaijan in expanding practical cooperation, building on existing strategic frameworks, while supporting peace efforts in the Caucasus through the Zayed Award recognition, and opening new pathways in defence, municipal collaboration, and economic sectors that serve both countries’ future plans.
