UAE Aviation Safety Conference 2024 Concludes In Dubai With Focus On Safety Management And Innovation
The "UAE Aviation Safety Conference 2024" recently concluded in Dubai, organised by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). The event, themed "Safety: The Constant in a Changing Industry," featured 24 expert speakers from various aviation safety sectors, including government agencies and airlines. It addressed critical topics such as Wake Turbulence, Safety Management Systems (SMS), Fatigue Management, and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).
The conference's first day included the presentation of the Safety Marathon award winners. This award, organised by the GCAA, aims to enhance efforts towards sustainable development in national aviation infrastructure. Discussions also covered continuous operational safety and regulatory frameworks for general aviation, including private jets and business aircraft.

The SMS panel delved into advancements in proactive safety oversight. It focused on evolving safety management frameworks that incorporate data-driven decision-making and risk management. Best practices from regulatory bodies and industry leaders were highlighted to ensure the UAE remains at the forefront of global aviation safety standards.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, emphasised the importance of enhancing safety management efficiency in aviation operations. He stated, "Enhancing the efficiency of safety management in aviation operations is a constant priority and a fundamental pillar of the civil aviation system."
The Fatigue Management Panel addressed fatigue risks in aviation beyond duty time limitations. Experts presented strategies to mitigate these risks across multiple operational sectors like flight operations and air traffic control. Real-world case studies and scientific research on fatigue's effects on safety performance were shared.
Aqeel Al Zarouni, Assistant Director-General for Aviation Safety Affairs at the GCAA, noted that technological developments make safety management more complex. He highlighted national efforts to adopt technological solutions ensuring sector safety.
Advanced Air Mobility Developments
The AAM panel discussed urban air transport's future with a focus on integrating electric vertical takeoff and landing (EVTOL) aircraft into existing systems. Regulatory challenges and infrastructure requirements were covered to ensure safe AAM operations. The UAE’s leadership in adopting these technologies was also highlighted.
On the second day, workshops included the UAE National Runway Safety Team (NRST) Workshop focusing on preventing runway incursions. Another workshop explored strategies to mitigate fatigue effects on maintenance personnel.
The conference introduced a new protocol for Communicable Disease Management Programme (CAR-CDMP), developed by GCAA with health authorities. This aims to prevent disease spread through air travel.
These discussions underscored the UAE's commitment to embracing advanced technologies and forward-thinking safety measures. The SSP continues to play a pivotal role in fostering proactive safety management across all aviation sectors.
