UAE And Australia Aim To Bolster Bilateral Ties Through Enhanced Cooperation
In a significant move to enhance bilateral relations, Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, spearheaded a high-level delegation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Australia. The visit aimed at fortifying ties in politics, economy, and trade between the two nations. Accompanied by Dr. Fahad Obaid Al Taffag, UAE Ambassador to Australia, and officials from Edge Holdings Group, the delegation's itinerary commenced with a pivotal meeting with Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia, in Canberra.
The discussions, which also saw the participation of Penny Wong, Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, centered on reaffirming the commitment of both countries to bolster their bilateral relations. This comes as the UAE and Australia near the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations next year. Key areas of cooperation such as trade, investment, aviation, and renewable energy were highlighted, with Al Hashimy emphasizing the dynamic nature of the UAE-Australia relationship, evidenced by frequent high-level visits in recent years.
Al Hashimy's agenda also included a meeting with Richard Marles, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence of Australia. The dialogue focused on exploring potential areas for development across various sectors. Both parties expressed their leadership's eagerness to enhance economic and trade cooperation to foster growth and prosperity for their countries and peoples.
The visit underscored a notable increase in non-oil trade exchange between the UAE and Australia, which has risen by 16.3 percent over the past four years. In a gesture of remembrance and solidarity, Al Hashimy laid a flower wreath at the Australian War Memorial on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Additionally, she paid tribute at the International Humanitarian Memorial in Canberra to Zomi Frankcom, an Australian national who tragically lost her life in Gaza on 1st April 2024.
Al Hashimy reiterated the UAE's strong condemnation of violence against humanitarian workers and underscored the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law. This visit not only highlights the deepening ties between the UAE and Australia but also showcases their mutual dedication to enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors for mutual benefit.
