UAE Athletes Clinch 18 Medals In Taekwondo At Gulf Youth Games

The United Arab Emirates has proudly kicked off the first Gulf Youth Games, marking a significant milestone in regional sports. Hosted at the Zayed Sports Complex in Fujairah, this grand event has seen the UAE clinching a total of 18 medals in taekwondo alone, including four golds. The games, under the theme "Our Gulf is One... Our Youth is Promising’’, have attracted more than 3,500 athletes from across the Gulf, competing in 24 different disciplines. This sporting extravaganza, which promises an engaging experience for both participants and spectators, is set to conclude on 2nd May 2024.

The taekwondo competitions set off with a dynamic start, featuring 124 male and female contestants vying for top honors. Dr. Ahmed Hamdan Al Zeyoudi, President of the UAE Taekwondo Federation, graced the event with his presence alongside leaders of other Gulf federations. The first day witnessed seventy thrilling matches across 10 weight categories for both genders, showcasing the high level of competition among the athletes.

UAE Wins 18 Taekwondo Medals

On home ground, the UAE demonstrated its dominance by topping the medal table with four golds, 11 silvers, and three bronze medals. Close on their heels was Kuwait, securing 16 medals comprised of seven golds, two silvers, and seven bronzes. Saudi Arabia also made a strong showing with nine medals (three gold, four silver, and two bronze), while Oman rounded off with five medals (four gold and one silver).

Among the UAE's standout athletes were Maitha Rashid, who triumphed in the junior women's under-44 kg category, and Marwa Zuhair, who excelled in the under-47 kg division. Sharifa Ismail displayed exceptional skill in the under-55 kg weight category, while Nasser Ahmed Al Muhairi shone in the junior men's under-49 kg division.

Dr. Al Zeyoudi expressed his satisfaction with the successful start of the taekwondo competitions in Fujairah and extended a warm welcome to the delegations from the Gulf Cooperation Council. He commended the meticulous preparations undertaken by the UAE National Olympic Committee to ensure the success of this inaugural edition of the Youth Gulf Games hosted by the country.

This event not only highlights the athletic prowess of young talents across the Gulf but also strengthens bonds among participating nations. As these games progress towards their conclusion, they continue to embody the spirit of unity and promise among the youth of the Gulf region.
