UAE Astronauts Set To Graduate From NASA's Elite Training Programme
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has officially announced a significant milestone in the UAE's space exploration journey. Astronauts Nora AlMatrooshi and Mohammad AlMulla, members of the second batch of the UAE Astronaut Programme, are set to graduate from the 2021 NASA Astronaut Candidate Class training programme. This prestigious event will take place on March 5 at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, USA, marking a pivotal moment in their careers and the UAE's space exploration endeavors.
Since January 2022, AlMatrooshi and AlMulla have undergone an extensive and intensive training period. Their preparation, spanning over two years, has equipped them with a broad spectrum of essential skills. These include spacewalking, robotics, understanding space station systems, T-38 jet proficiency, and proficiency in the Russian language. Their rigorous training ensures they are well-prepared for various spaceflight assignments.

The 2021 class comprises ten NASA candidates along with the UAE’s own AlMulla and AlMatrooshi. Notably, AlMatrooshi is also recognized as the first female Arab astronaut. The graduation ceremony will see each candidate receiving an astronaut pin. This pin is not merely symbolic but signifies their readiness for future space missions and their potential contributions to ongoing and future explorations.
The selection of Emirati astronauts for the second batch of the UAE Astronaut Programme was announced in 2021 by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The MBRSC received a staggering 4,305 applications for these coveted positions. Following a rigorous evaluation process that adhered to international standards, AlMatrooshi and AlMulla emerged as the final candidates.
The UAE Astronaut Programme is a cornerstone project managed by MBRSC under the umbrella of the UAE’s National Space Programme. It receives funding from the ICT Fund of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). The programme's aim is to bolster research and development within the ICT sector in the UAE while enhancing the country's global integration.
This graduation marks not only a personal achievement for Nora AlMatrooshi and Mohammad AlMulla but also represents a significant step forward for the UAE in its ambitious space exploration journey. As they prepare to embark on future missions, their success underscores the UAE's commitment to establishing a prominent presence in global space exploration efforts.
