UAE Reveals Winners Of $1 Million SMBR Global Aviation Award For Sustainable Aviation Innovation
The UAE recently celebrated the winners of the third Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Aviation Award (SMBR), distributing a total prize of USD 1 million. This award recognises excellence in aviation, with a focus on sustainability and innovation. The event highlighted the UAE's commitment to advancing global civil aviation through research and development.
Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism and Chairman of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), stated: "The SMBR Global Aviation Award embodies the UAE’s commitment to supporting research and innovation, motivating young talents and research institutions to develop practical and sustainable solutions that will shape the future of global civil aviation."

The third edition of the award concentrated on sustainability, particularly sustainable aviation fuel solutions. This aligns with international goals for carbon neutrality by 2050. The UAE's role in fostering innovation and global cooperation was evident through this initiative. The award is organised every three years in collaboration with ICAO, having been launched in 2016.
Winners in the Academic Research and Development category hailed from universities in Brazil, the United States, and Kazakhstan. Meanwhile, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) secured victory in the Research Institutions category. These achievements underscore the global reach and impact of the award.
During the 42nd Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Abdulla Al Marri delivered an official statement emphasising aviation as a bridge for human communication. He noted that under UAE leadership, aviation has become central to national vision and global mission, with 189 air service agreements reflecting open skies as key to shared prosperity.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, remarked: "We are proud to host this reception as a platform to honor innovators and showcase their achievements to global aviation leaders. The SMBR Global Aviation Award reflects the UAE’s pioneering role in supporting the aviation industry and enhancing its position as an incubator for initiatives that inspire the world and advance sustainability."
Commitment to Global Cooperation
The UAE has implemented significant measures towards sustainability, including a roadmap for sustainable aviation fuel production. Initiatives like a digital platform for CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) have been developed alongside establishing the Global Sustainable Aviation Marketplace (GSAM).
Al Marri further stated: "The UAE believes that progress in aviation cannot be achieved unless it includes everyone, and sustainability can only be realized through investment in human capital. To this end, the UAE has developed several initiatives to build sector competencies in collaboration with its international partners."
The evening saw an official state reception hosted by the UAE in Montreal as part of ICAO assembly protocol. This event blended formalities with cultural elements, attended by ministers, civil aviation directors from ICAO member states, and officials from regional and international organisations.
He added: "The UAE has repeatedly opened its doors to host the world, serving as a hub for partners, a supportive voice for international cooperation, and a bridge between regions as a trusted and constructive ally." This highlights their ongoing dedication to fostering international partnerships within aviation.
