UAE Commits US$15 Million To UNHCR For Humanitarian Aid In Sudan And Neighbouring Countries

The United Arab Emirates has pledged US$15 million to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). This funding supports humanitarian efforts in Sudan and nearby regions. The announcement was made during the UNHCR Pledging Conference for the 2026 Global Appeal. This contribution highlights the UAE's ongoing dedication to aiding those affected by conflict and instability.

Jamal Al Musharakh, the UAE's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, reiterated the country's commitment to helping refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) worldwide. He noted that global displacement is at an all-time high due to conflict, persecution, and climate challenges. Al Musharakh stressed the importance of collective action based on solidarity and shared responsibility.

UAE Pledges US$15 Million for Sudan Aid

Al Musharakh pointed out severe humanitarian crises in regions like South Sudan, Sudan, the Sahel, Myanmar, and Ukraine. These crises force families across borders or within their own countries. Internal displacement remains a significant issue in areas such as the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa, where violence and climate pressures worsen conditions.

He emphasised that women, children, and at-risk groups face heightened vulnerability and need targeted support. The UAE is committed to providing principled humanitarian assistance through UAE AID in collaboration with UNHCR and other partners. This ensures access to essential services for displaced persons while supporting host communities.

"Refugees and IDPs are individuals with dignity and have the right to live in safety and hope," stated Al Musharakh. He highlighted that predictable funding and equitable burden-sharing are crucial for delivering humanitarian aid safely and sustainably.

UAE's Humanitarian Efforts

The UAE's US$15 million pledge aims to bolster protection and assistance programs for those affected by the crisis in Sudan and neighbouring countries. This effort contributes to long-term stability and resilience. It reflects the UAE’s core values of humanitarian solidarity rooted in its leadership and people.

The UAE has been actively supporting Sudan since conflict erupted in 2023. It has provided US$784 million in relief aid, making it the second-largest donor after the United States, according to OCHA. From 2015 to 2025, UAE aid to Sudan has exceeded US$4.24 billion.

International Collaboration

This aid is part of the UAE’s unwavering commitment to addressing this catastrophic crisis alongside regional and international partners. The focus is particularly on Africa, aiming for stability and sustainable development for Sudanese people.

The UNHCR Pledging Conference is an annual event held at Geneva's Palais des Nations. Member States gather here to announce voluntary contributions supporting UNHCR’s global humanitarian response for the upcoming year.
