UAE’s AI Office Collaborates With UNDP To Propel Global AI Adoption

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government's Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications Office has recently entered into a significant partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This collaboration aims to push the boundaries of research and development in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and nurture talent not only within the Arab region but also on a global scale. The agreement was formalized by Dr. Abdallah Al Dardari, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Arab States, alongside Saqr bin Ghalib, Executive Director of the aforementioned UAE government office.

Dr. Al Dardari expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing a shared commitment to exploring AI's potential ethically and responsibly. He highlighted the initiative's focus on innovation and its role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By integrating advanced AI and digital ecosystems across various sectors, the collaboration aims to foster significant progress and benefit people across the Arab region and beyond.

Saqr bin Ghalib underscored the UAE government's forward-thinking approach to expanding technological partnerships. He stressed that adopting these technologies to serve communities remains a top priority, aligning with leadership directives to broaden AI adoption for humanity's benefit. Ghalib also noted that the World Government Summit provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen such partnerships, supporting societal well-being, future efforts, and innovative solutions to challenges.

The agreement sets forth several key objectives aimed at enhancing partnerships in areas of mutual interest. It seeks to leverage AI to accelerate progress towards sustainable development goals by identifying necessary factors for developing and utilizing AI and digital ecosystems. Formulating ethical policies that adhere to responsible AI development standards is also a priority, ensuring these standards align with societal values.

Furthermore, the initiative aims to support innovation and digital inclusion, focusing on community benefits and prioritizing AI as a development tool. It includes exchanging knowledge, supporting joint digital initiatives, enhancing decision-making with AI technologies and digital tools, and employing AI for data analysis to develop reliable policies. Establishing robust data management frameworks and ethical guidelines for AI is crucial to enhancing trust and increasing technology adoption by mitigating data risks.

Advancing Skills and Knowledge Exchange

In terms of skills development, the partnership intends to facilitate knowledge exchange, refine experiences, empower individuals, and strengthen institutions in the AI field. This includes training in data science and machine learning, sharing practical theories, and best practices on current platforms and applications.

The UNDP's global presence in nearly 170 countries positions it as a vital operational arm of the United Nations at the country level. It works with partners worldwide to promote sustainable development, poverty eradication, women's advancement, good governance, and the rule of law.
