UAE AI Office Collaborates with Emirates Global Aluminium to Propel AI Use in Industry

The United Arab Emirates is making significant strides in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its industrial sector, as demonstrated by a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the UAE’s Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications office and Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA). This collaboration, announced at the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024 in Dubai, underscores the nation's commitment to enhancing its global competitive stance through digital transformation.

Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, alongside Abdulnasser bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, formalized the agreement. Al Olama highlighted the critical role of digitizing key sectors with AI applications in boosting the UAE's global competitiveness and accelerating digital transformation across all industrial domains. He commended EGA’s initiative in adopting Fourth Industrial Revolution solutions, including AI, to improve its operations.

UAE AI and EGA Boost Industrial AI Adoption

Abdulnasser bin Kalban expressed EGA’s recognition of AI’s transformative potential in automating industrial processes and enhancing employee experiences. He emphasized the mutual benefits of this partnership with the government's AI office in speeding up EGA’s transformation and inspiring other companies.

The partnership aims to foster research collaborations on AI, potentially for developing new aluminium alloys. It also seeks to upskill EGA staff in AI technologies, promote career opportunities to UAE National students, and collaborate with universities to align curricula with industry needs. This initiative supports EGA’s Industry 4.0 transformation begun in 2021 to boost operational efficiency and establish itself as a digital beacon for the regional and global aluminium industry.

EGA’s adoption of Fourth Industrial Revolution solutions includes leveraging sensor data with image and video analytics to enhance supply chain management, automated quality testing, and safety procedures. These technological advancements enable more data-driven scientific applications in the industrial sector. Notably, EGA has been developing its proprietary aluminium smelting technologies locally for over three decades.

The WGS 2024 is a prominent event featuring six main themes across 15 forums. It hosts over 23 ministerial meetings and roundtables, involving 85 international, regional, and intergovernmental organisations. The summit includes more than 120 interactive sessions and workshops, with participation from 300 notable figures such as heads of state, ministers, experts, thinkers, and decision-makers.

This MoU between the UAE’s Artificial Intelligence Office and EGA marks a pivotal step towards integrating AI into the nation's industrial fabric. It not only aims at enhancing operational efficiencies but also at preparing the workforce for future challenges through education and skill development. This partnership exemplifies the UAE's proactive approach to embracing technological advancements for economic growth and global competitiveness.
