UAE And African Union Commission Conduct First Round Of Political Consultations In Abu Dhabi
The United Arab Emirates and the African Union Commission recently held their first political consultations in Abu Dhabi. This meeting built on a 2019 Memorandum of Understanding and a recent agreement from July 2025 focused on health partnerships in Africa. Both parties are committed to strengthening their strategic partnership by enhancing technical coordination and holding regular discussions to monitor progress.
During these talks, both sides expressed strong support for Qatar amid recent attacks by Israel, which threaten regional and global peace. The Chairperson of the AU Commission also reiterated support for the UAE's sovereignty over its occupied islands: Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa.

The economic relationship between the UAE and Africa was a key focus. The UAE is the top investor in Africa, aiming to foster shared development through investments in infrastructure, energy, and sustainable growth. These efforts align with Africa's priorities in electricity, digitalisation, and empowering women and youth.
Both parties highlighted the importance of joint efforts to boost security and stability across regions like the Horn of Africa, Sudan, Central Africa, and the Sahel. They acknowledged the UAE's role during its tenure on the United Nations Security Council (2022–2023) in supporting African issues alongside the three African member states on the Council (A3).
The consultations underscored the deep-rooted ties between the UAE and Africa. These connections are based on shared interests and historical links, strengthened by high-level visits such as President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's recent trip to Angola. This visit was significant given Angola's current leadership of the AU and its mediation role across Africa.
Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, met with Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the AU Commission. They explored ways to enhance cooperation in investment, renewable energy, youth empowerment, and women's roles in development.
The discussions concluded with a reaffirmation of commitment to advancing the UAE–AU partnership. Both sides aim to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development throughout Africa through this collaboration.
