UAE-Africa Dialogue Launched To Enhance Relations And Boost Trade Opportunities

The Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy (AGDA), in collaboration with the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), has initiated the UAE - Africa Dialogue. This event gathers experts, scholars, diplomats, and policymakers to explore ways to strengthen ties between Sub-Saharan African countries and the Gulf region, especially focusing on the UAE. Discussions encompass economic, diplomatic, cultural, and security policies.

Held at AGDA on October 28th and 29th, the dialogue features representatives from leading think tanks. The aim is to develop innovative strategies that promote cooperation and investment while addressing emerging challenges. The event commenced with speeches from Nickolay Mladenov of AGDA, Dr. Sultan Al-Nuaimi of ECSSR, and Ambassador Martin Kimani.

UAE-Africa Dialogue Enhances Trade Relations

Nickolay Mladenov emphasised the significance of open discussions driven by shared interests. He stated, "The growing economic partnerships between the UAE and Africa, shaped by geographical proximity and historical ties, are now focused on addressing critical issues such as food security, energy transition and infrastructure development." He highlighted AGDA's role in fostering meaningful dialogues to enhance economic growth in both regions.

Dr. Sultan Al-Nuaimi noted the UAE's longstanding investment in African infrastructure sectors like transportation and energy. He remarked that their relationships extend beyond trade to include humanitarian efforts aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). "We also focus on helping to alleviate poverty and promote environmental sustainability," he added.

The sessions cover various topics such as "Economic Cooperation between the UAE and Africa" and "UAE-Africa Diplomacy." Other discussions include "The Role of the UAE and Africa in the UN Security Council," "UAE-Africa Cooperation in Innovative Technologies," and "Climate Change." These themes aim to address pressing issues like food security and green transitions.

By bringing together a diverse group of experts at this summit, AGDA and ECSSR aim to shape future relations between the UAE and Sub-Saharan African nations. This includes Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPA) and initiatives like the Ministry of Economy’s UAE - Africa Gateway.

New Opportunities Through Trade Agreements

The Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents new opportunities for trade with a unified African market. The UAE has become a significant foreign direct investor in Africa, ranking fourth after China, the EU, and the USA. This opens doors for enhanced trade relations between these regions.

This dialogue underscores the commitment of both AGDA and ECSSR to facilitating sustainable growth through strategic partnerships. By focusing on mutual interests such as infrastructure projects and humanitarian assistance, they aim to meet essential requirements for achieving global development goals effectively.
