UAE Strengthens Its Role As A Global Leader In Clean Energy Innovation And Sustainability

The UAE is a leader in the global shift to clean energy, with projects that boost energy security and inspire innovation. Celebrated on 26th January, the International Day of Clean Energy highlights the UAE's rapid progress in renewable energy, setting an example for sustainable and equitable energy worldwide.

Dr. Nawal Al-Hosany, the UAE's Permanent Representative to IRENA, highlighted the nation's success in establishing 26th January as the International Day of Clean Energy. This date aligns with IRENA's founding and emphasises future energy's role in environmental protection, job creation, and business sector growth.

UAE Leads Global Clean Energy Initiatives

The UAE actively promotes global investment in clean energy through strategic partnerships and financial solutions. These efforts focus on climate-vulnerable and developing regions, supporting sustainable initiatives. Dr. Al-Hosany noted that clean energy expands green economic opportunities and aids in meeting climate commitments like those made during COP28.

In early 2023, the UAE launched a groundbreaking project in Abu Dhabi. This initiative combines solar power with battery storage to deliver up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable baseload power daily. It represents the world's largest combined solar and battery energy storage system (BESS).

The Abu Dhabi project includes a 5.2GW (DC) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant paired with a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) BESS. This sets a new standard for clean energy innovation globally. Additionally, the Al Ajban Solar PV Independent Power Project is set to enhance the UAE's clean energy portfolio by 2026.

Expected to generate 1.5 gigawatts of electricity, Al Ajban will help achieve carbon neutrality by reducing emissions by over 2.4 million tonnes annually. It will be among the largest independent solar power stations worldwide.

Commitment to Global Ambitions

The UAE hosts three of the world's largest solar power plants, aiming for a clean energy capacity of 14.2 gigawatts by 2030. This commitment aligns with global ambitions and compliance with the Paris Agreement, which the UAE was first to sign in its region.

Projects like Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park and Barakah Nuclear Power Plant enhance the UAE's portfolio of efficient projects for a sustainable future combining innovation and environmental protection.

Nuclear Energy Contributions

The Barakah nuclear reactors have produced nearly 88,000 gigawatt-hours of eco-friendly electricity so far. They play a crucial role in positioning the UAE at the forefront of climate action by reducing carbon emissions by more than 43,000 kilotonnes since their operation began.

Over six years, no country has added more clean electricity per capita than the UAE. The Barakah plant contributes significantly, producing 40 TWh annually—meeting 25% of national electricity needs and 85% of Abu Dhabi’s clean electricity demand.

Exploring Advanced Technologies

This output equals what is needed for 45 large data centres or powering 16 million electric vehicles yearly. With all units operational, Emirates Nuclear Energy Company explores advanced nuclear technologies like small modular reactors (SMR), hydrogen sources, and regional supply chain development.

The company invests in international nuclear projects while strengthening partnerships to further its clean energy goals.
