UAE Road Safety Report 2023: Decrease In Fatalities, Major Violations Revealed
The UAE has made significant progress in reducing the number fatalities on its roads, with the latest statistics showing a slight increase in fatality numbers, but still near the 'All Time Low' witnessed in the previous year. The Ministry of Interior (MOI) has recently released the road safety statistics for 2023, which reveal some alarming trends. While there has been a decrease in fatalities, the number of accidents and injuries has risen, highlighting the need for continued efforts to improve road safety.
The statistics indicate that there are five major violations that are responsible for the majority of fatalities and injuries on the roads. These violations include distracted driving, sudden deviation, tailgating, negligence and inattention, and lack of lane discipline. Addressing these violations should be a priority for all stakeholders, both public and private. It is crucial for organizations to run awareness campaigns and initiatives to educate their staff and customers about safe driving practices. Schools and employers also play a vital role in promoting road safety among their students and employees. Additionally, there is a need to further develop the legal framework and enforcement to ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
It is concerning to note that 98% of casualties occur in good weather and clear road conditions, indicating that road users need to be more mindful and responsible. There is a particular focus on young road users, especially those in the age bracket of 19-29 years, who account for a significant proportion of fatalities and injuries. New driving license holders also contribute to a significant number of major accidents, highlighting the need for awareness and education programs targeted at this vulnerable group. Driving schools, universities, employers, and parents need to play their part in promoting safe driving habits among young road users. Additionally, revisiting the driving school education system, implementing staged driving licenses, and using monitoring technologies for novice drivers could help improve road safety.
Motorcycle riders and micro-mobility users, such as cyclists, e-bike riders, and scooter riders, are overrepresented in the victims' statistics. More efforts should be made to protect these vulnerable road users through targeted initiatives and improved infrastructure. It is essential for drivers to be more cautious and interact mindfully with these road users to prevent accidents.

The data also reveals that certain roads and specific times of the day pose a higher risk for road users. Road users must exercise extra caution when traveling on the top 10 dangerous roads identified in the statistics. Evening time is particularly risky, with 43% of the victims involved in accidents occurring during this period. Abu Dhabi has the highest number of fatalities, while Dubai tops the list in terms of injured persons.
The UAE has made significant progress in reducing road fatalities over the years, with a remarkable drop of 67% since 2008. However, the recent increase in accidents and injuries calls for renewed efforts to ensure the safety of road users. It is crucial for all stakeholders to work together and prioritize road safety by addressing the major violations, targeting young road users, and protecting vulnerable road users. With continued focus and collective action, the UAE can further improve its road safety record and ensure safer roads for all.
