Two UAE Endurance Riders Sheikh Khalifa Al Hamed And Issa Al Khiyari Tie For First Place In Mongol Derby

Two endurance riders from the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa Al Hamed and Issa Al Khiyari, achieved a significant milestone by tying for first place in the "Mongol Derby" alongside American Michael Pollard and Briton Anna Boden. This race is renowned as the world's longest equine adventure, spanning 1,000 km over eight days from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., starting on August 4.

The Mongol Derby is an equestrian endurance event known for its challenging course through the Mongolian Steppe. Riders cover a distance of 1,000 kilometres, making it the longest horse race globally. The event concluded with an awards ceremony scheduled for Wednesday.

UAE Riders Make History in Mongol Derby

Sheikh Khalifa Al Hamed expressed that completing the race with Issa Al Khiyari was a remarkable feat due to the tough conditions and numerous obstacles. The course included diverse terrains such as mountain passes, green valleys, rolling hills, plains, sand dunes, and riverbeds. Their determination to finish showcased Emirati resilience in overcoming challenges.

Many participants withdrew at different stages because of exhaustion and difficulties managing the Mongolian horses. Despite these challenges, Sheikh Khalifa Al Hamed and Issa Al Khiyari persevered to demonstrate their commitment to finishing this demanding competition.

Sheikh Khalifa Al Hamed highlighted that one of the most daunting aspects was handling unfamiliar Mongolian horses. Unlike other races where riders compete with their own horses, this added complexity made reaching the finish line a significant achievement. Riders spent around 12 hours daily on horseback during their first participation in this event.

The endurance race tested participants' limits as they navigated through varied landscapes under challenging conditions. Despite these hurdles, Sheikh Khalifa Al Hamed and Issa Al Khiyari's determination led them to complete the race successfully.

Their participation in this prestigious event underscores their dedication to showcasing Emirati capabilities on an international stage. Their success in such a grueling competition highlights their perseverance and skill in equestrian sports.
