Tuwaiq Sculpture Symposium 2026: Riyadh Transforms The Capital Into An Open-Air Art Museum

The Tuwaiq Sculpture Symposium 2026 brings public art in Riyadh into everyday life, rather than treating it as decoration. The event turns Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Street, known as Tahlia Street, into an open-air studio where artworks respond directly to an active urban setting.

The 2026 edition takes place under the theme "Traces of What Will Be," which links past, present, and future. The concept connects artistic transformation with urban change, using the street’s memory and anticipated development as a shared reference for participating artists and visitors.

Tuwaiq 2026: Riyadh’s Open-Air Art Museum

Art in Riyadh is no longer seen as a secondary feature added to streets and plazas. It now plays a central role in shaping the city’s character, influencing quality of life, and reinforcing the daily bond between residents, visitors, and the places they move through.

The organisers selected Tahlia Street due to its recognised social and cultural importance in Riyadh. The street has witnessed repeated changes in lifestyle and public behaviour over time. This background gives each sculpture both spatial meaning and conceptual weight, strengthening its visibility and long-term impact.

The Tuwaiq Sculpture Symposium 2026 hosts 25 artists, male and female, representing 18 different countries. Their works are produced on-site in front of spectators as part of a continuous live sculpting programme. This arrangement invites the public to watch each stage of creation in an informal outdoor environment.

The live sculpting aspect extends beyond simple viewing and encourages interaction between art and the city’s daily rhythms. Finished sculptures stay within the public space and engage with surrounding movement. This approach reduces distance between artists and audiences, builds visual awareness, and places art at the centre of the urban experience.
