World Bank To Loan Türkiye $500 Million For Job Creation In 2023 Earthquake-Affected Regions
Türkiye has been awarded a significant $500 million loan from international sources, specifically aimed at bolstering employment and generating new job opportunities in the regions severely impacted by the earthquakes in February 2023.
This financial boost, courtesy of the World Bank, is designed to assist the southeastern provinces that are still grappling with the aftermath of the calamity that struck over two years ago.

The primary goal of this funding is to safeguard existing jobs and to facilitate the creation of new employment opportunities. It specifically targets small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and larger companies situated in the 11 provinces directly hit by the earthquakes.
These include Adana, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmaraş, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Şanlıurfa. Additionally, seven neighboring provinces, namely Batman, Bingöl, Kayseri, Mardin, Niğde, Sivas, and Tunceli, will also benefit from this project.
This initiative stands as the latest move by the Turkish government to obtain advantageous and long-lasting external funds. It specifically targets the restoration and economic uplift of the areas devastated by the earthquakes, which resulted in the loss of over 50,000 lives, displaced upwards of 3.3 million individuals, and led to the damage or total destruction of more than 1.9 million homes, both in rural and urban settings.
The World Bank's board of executive directors has sanctioned this new funding, which will flow through the Development Investment Bank of Türkiye (TKYB) under the safeguard of the Treasury and Finance Ministry, as reported by Anadolu Agency. Mehmet Şimşek, the Treasury and Finance Minister, highlighted on Tuesday the critical nature of these endeavors to lessen the economic fallout in the afflicted regions and to hasten the path to economic recuperation.
Şimşek underscored the ongoing reconstruction efforts, stating that the authorities are prioritizing measures aiming to mitigate the disaster's negative economic effects and to speed up recovery in the affected areas.
“In this context, we are maintaining strong collaboration with international organizations, particularly the World Bank," he mentioned, as quoted by Anadolu Agency. He further elaborated on the nation’s economic strategy, which is firmly focused on sustainable prosperity. This strategy includes supporting investments that add value, enhancing production and exports, and fortifying employment.
