Tsunami Alerts In Japan And Evacuations In Philippines As Typhoon Fung-Wong Approaches Luzon

A tsunami warning was issued for Japan's Iwate Prefecture following a significant seismic event. Meanwhile, the Philippines evacuated nearly one million residents as Typhoon Fung-Wong, known locally as Owan, impacted Luzon. Authorities in both nations advised people to avoid coastal areas due to potential dangers. The United States tsunami warning system confirmed a 6.26-magnitude earthquake off Honshu's east coast earlier in the day.

Japan's public broadcaster reported that a tsunami wave was detected 70 kilometres from Iwate's coast at 17:12 local time (08:12 GMT). The wave was expected to reach the Pacific-facing shoreline shortly, with an estimated height of about one metre. Residents were urged to stay away from coastal zones to ensure their safety.

In the Philippines, Typhoon Fung-Wong prompted the evacuation of over 900,000 individuals from high-risk areas across Luzon. The typhoon brought heavy rain and winds up to 185 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching 230 kilometres per hour. Level-five warnings were issued in parts of southeast and central Philippines, including Catanduanes and Aurora.

The storm led to the suspension of work and classes in several regions, including Metro Manila. Fung-Wong was expected to make landfall in Aurora province later in the evening. This comes shortly after Typhoon Kalmaegi caused significant damage and fatalities in the region.

The Civil Aviation Authority announced that approximately 400 flights, both domestic and international, had been cancelled due to the severe weather conditions. Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro emphasized the importance of adhering to evacuation orders, stating that ignoring them is both dangerous and unlawful.

The military redirected around 2,000 personnel from field training exercises to focus on humanitarian assistance and disaster response efforts. These measures aim to ensure swift aid delivery and support for affected communities during this challenging time.
