Effective Jan 1, 2025: Trucks Banned On This Road Towards Sharjah During Peak Evening Hours
Starting January 1, 2025, heavy vehicle movement will be limited on Emirates Road, between Al Awir Street and Sharjah, during the evening rush hours from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the Dubai Police General Headquarters, seeks to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance the safety of road users, and ensure smoother flows of private vehicles during peak times.
The decision to impose restrictions on truck movement is a strategic move by the RTA to decrease traffic congestion during critical hours and improve overall road safety standards in Dubai. By limiting the movement of heavy vehicles on certain roads, the RTA aims to provide a safer and more efficient travel experience for private vehicle owners, while also addressing environmental concerns by reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
The RTA has a well-established policy that bars trucks from major roads, including Al Ittihad Street, Meydan Street, and other key crossings, to maintain traffic flow and safety. Additionally, certain roads near residential areas and high-traffic zones like Sheikh Zayed Road have a 16-hour daily truck movement ban in place. The prohibition spans from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, aiming to reduce the interaction between heavy vehicles and smaller, private vehicles during the busiest times of the day.
Medium-congestion urban areas experience truck movement limitations during peak morning and evening hours to further alleviate traffic build-up. Streets such as Airport Street, Oman Street, and Damascus Street face restrictions at specific times to ensure smooth traffic flow and reduce potential accidents involving trucks and smaller vehicles.
Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Acting Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, emphasized the importance of this new restriction on Emirates Road, highlighting its basis on comprehensive engineering and technical studies.
He stated, "The decision to ban truck movement on Emirates Road towards Sharjah during evening peak hours, starting 1 January 2025, was made following an extensive study of the engineering and technical standards required to balance safety needs with transportation demands. The decision includes restricting truck movement at specific times on Emirates Road, particularly in the evening when traffic volumes are high. The primary objective is to reduce traffic accidents caused by the overlap between trucks and smaller vehicles and to ease congestion on vital roads."
Al Mazrouei also mentioned that Dubai Police, in partnership with the RTA, is focusing on raising awareness among truck drivers and transport companies about the updated timings to ensure compliance and minimize the risk of violations.
He further noted, "Motorists will be informed through various media channels, road signs, and other communication platforms to ensure clarity on the implementation. This approach will facilitate effective enforcement of the decision with minimal disruption to freight and transport operations. Truck owners and drivers must comply with the restrictions to avoid fines and penalties. Notably, 792 violations have been recorded this year due to non-compliance with truck movement ban timings."
In response to the enhanced truck movement restrictions, RTA is developing a network of truck rest areas in collaboration with the private sector. Since mid-2023, a developmental plan has been underway to establish 19 stations and rest areas along critical roads such as Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road. These facilities, covering over 300,000 square metres, can accommodate around 1,000 trucks and heavy vehicles. They aim to offer drivers a safe place to rest and wait out the movement ban periods, contributing to road safety and driver welfare.
Furthermore, three integrated stations are in development, designed to provide comprehensive services to truck drivers, including diesel refuelling, maintenance workshops, and rest facilities. These stations will significantly contribute to the safety and convenience of heavy vehicle operators, ensuring they have access to essential amenities and services.
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, stressed the importance of the ban, stating it aligns with RTA's strategy to relieve congestion during peak hours and improve traffic flow across Dubai's thoroughfares. "The ban on heavy vehicles along Emirates Road during evening peak hours, in the direction of Sharjah, will enhance the flow of light vehicles, improve road safety on Emirates Road, and redistribute truck traffic to alternative routes where movement is permitted, ultimately reducing travel times for road users," he explained.
