TRENDS Addresses European Parliament Conference On Confronting Polarisation And Extremism Among Youth
TRENDS Research & Advisory participated in a conference titled "Bridging Divides: Addressing Polarisation and Extremism Among Europe’s Youth." This event, organised by the International Movement for Peace & Coexistence (IMPAC) and MEP Antonio López-Istúriz White, took place at the European Parliament in Brussels. TRENDS aims to counter extremism by spreading knowledge and fostering dialogue.
Researcher Abdulaziz Al Marzooqi delivered a keynote speech highlighting the challenges of polarisation and extremism among Europe's youth. He noted that extremist political movements, particularly those linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, are exploiting narratives to create division. These groups often operate under the guise of non-governmental organisations across Europe.

Al Marzooqi emphasised the importance of understanding how these extremist networks function. They frequently hide behind "progressivism" or "woke" ideologies, which can have severe consequences for Europe's social cohesion. These groups contribute to youth radicalisation and undermine integration efforts through financial backing and strategic partnerships.
The address also highlighted the need to identify the sources of power and funding for the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates. TRENDS' reports and seminars have focused on countering their influence to protect Europe's values of unity and inclusivity.
Education plays a crucial role in combating extremism, according to TRENDS. It is essential for equipping young people with critical thinking skills and resilience against harmful ideologies. Educational reforms should promote openness, dialogue, and understanding of diverse perspectives. The Brussels Roundtable was cited as an example of advancing anti-indoctrination curricula.
TRENDS also reviewed international experiences, including the UAE's de-radicalisation model. This model offers insights into cooperation between governments, communities, and institutions to combat extremism effectively. However, caution was advised regarding regions where Brotherhood-linked organisations have caused division instead of unity.
Global Cooperation Needed
The address concluded that tackling polarisation and extremism requires global cooperation, vigilance, and a commitment to peace and tolerance. This approach is vital for ensuring a future of unity and progress for Europe's youth.
Imam Mohammad Tawhidi from The Global Imams Council – Canada spoke on behalf of TRENDS before the European Parliament. He warned that Islamist networks, especially the Muslim Brotherhood, are pursuing a coordinated strategy to infiltrate Europe and undermine its democratic institutions.
"These groups operate according to well-studied plans rather than as random actors," he stated. Imam Tawhidi praised the UAE's pivotal role in confronting extremist ideologies and promoting intellectual security.
