Transport Ministry Launches Innovative Rubber Pavement And Road Cooling Initiatives For Hajj Pilgrims
Saleh Al-Jasser, the Minister of Transport and Logistic Services, has introduced several projects for the Hajj season 1446 AH. These initiatives aim to improve pilgrim comfort at holy sites. Key projects include expanding flexible rubber road applications and a road cooling project using heat-reducing materials.
The Roads General Authority reported an 82% increase in road cooling areas this year. This follows the successful launch of the initiative in 2023, which saw over 84,000 square meters of roads paved in Arafat. Locally manufactured materials are used to reduce heat absorption, lowering surface temperatures by nearly 12 degrees Celsius and increasing reflectivity by 30-40% during mornings.

These efforts help mitigate the urban heat island effect, providing a more comfortable environment for pilgrims while reducing energy consumption and air pollution. The initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goals to enhance inclusivity and improve quality of life.
A notable initiative includes a dedicated 4,000-meter pathway along the pedestrian route to Mount Arafat. This path is paved with specialized materials to minimize vibrations and support companions. It aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goal to enhance inclusivity and improve quality of life.
The Roads General Authority is committed to developing research and practical experiments as part of its role overseeing the road sector in the Kingdom. Its efforts align with the Road Sector Strategy, which emphasizes promoting innovation.
Road Sector Strategy and Global Ranking
The strategy aims to elevate road quality to secure sixth place globally and reduce fatalities to less than five per 100,000 people by 2030. The road sector plays a crucial role in empowering various vital sectors through the Kingdom's road network, which is first worldwide in terms of interconnectedness, spanning over 73,000 kilometers.
