Trakhees Ramps Up Inspections To Over 22,000, Reporting 450 Violations In 2023
In a significant move to bolster regulatory compliance within its jurisdiction, the Department of Planning and Development (Trakhees), the regulatory arm of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation, has dramatically increased its inspection activities throughout 2023. The department executed an impressive 22,249 inspection tours across retail facilities in its development zones, marking a substantial increase from the previous year. This surge in inspections led to the discovery and issuance of 450 violations across various sectors, indicating a proactive approach towards maintaining standards and safeguarding customer rights.
The Licensing Department of Trakhees released official statistics highlighting a 108 percent increase in the number of inspection tours compared to 2022. The previous year saw 10,692 tours resulting in 220 violations, underscoring a significant escalation in enforcement activities. Abdullah Belhoul, CEO of Trakhees, shed light on the department's methodical approach to conducting these inspections. According to Belhoul, the inspections are carried out based on a detailed plan and schedule, adhering to specialised standards aimed at achieving strategic objectives. These objectives include enforcing trade and retail standards and requirements while focusing on reducing violations to protect consumer interests.

Belhoul further elaborated on the nature of the observed violations, which ranged from unauthorised use of additional spaces to non-compliance with mandatory specifications as per Trakhees regulations, laws, and guidelines.
