Traditional Plowing In Aseer: Farmers Uphold Ancient Techniques For Terraced Agriculture

In the Aseer Region, farmers maintain a strong connection to their agricultural roots by using oxen for plowing and relying on age-old tools. This approach is crucial for terraced farms, where modern machinery struggles with the rugged landscape. By blending traditional methods with contemporary techniques, farmers ensure effective soil preparation for planting seasons.

The agricultural calendar in Aseer is deeply influenced by traditional knowledge of celestial movements and weather patterns. Farmers use a wooden implement called Al-Neer to yoke oxen, which is attached to Al-Sikka, an iron tool with a sharp blade that cuts and turns the soil. This method remains integral to their farming practices.

Aseer Farmers Maintain Traditional Plowing Methods

Among the essential tools are Al-Mihrath, a plow made from Sidr or juniper wood with an iron blade, and Al-Midirrah, a wooden handle guiding Al-Sikka during plowing. Al-Dhamad secures the oxen to the plow and adjusts spacing. A leather or palm fiber rope ties the plow's head to Al-Dhamad, stabilizing it over the oxen's necks.

Two farmers collaborate during plowing; one balances the plow while the other scatters seeds. Afterward, a wide wooden plank about 2 meters long is dragged over the land by oxen or camels. This levels the soil and shields seeds from birds, wind, and heat.

Many farmers in Aseer believe that using oxen for plowing benefits the soil more than modern methods. It is seen as a natural way to maintain fertility while consuming less fuel. This practice holds significant cultural and historical value for them.

The enduring use of these traditional farming techniques highlights their importance in preserving both cultural heritage and environmental sustainability in Aseer Region's agriculture.
