Topian Launches First Climate-Resilient Greenhouse In Oxagon To Enhance Food Security

Topian, a food company under NEOM, has launched its first advanced greenhouse in Oxagon, an innovative industrial city on the Red Sea coast. This facility in northwest Saudi Arabia aims to test sustainable local production using cutting-edge technology. Situated in Oxagon Innovation Bay, the greenhouse covers four hectares and is part of Topian's mission to revolutionise food production with sustainable systems.

The primary objective of this pilot project is to enhance productivity and crop quality while reducing resource use, particularly water and energy. Dr. Juan Carlos Motamayor, CEO of Topian, stated: "This project is exciting because this first set of high-tech greenhouses enables us to control the climate for plant growth in an environmentally friendly manner, producing almost 4,000 tons of fruit and vegetables, while developing AI-driven predictive models for the operation of more efficient greenhouses elsewhere in the region. It represents a positive step toward boosting regional and national food security, and transforming food systems in Saudi Arabia and other arid regions affected by climate change."

Topian Opens Greenhouse in Oxagon for Sustainability

The initial phase will focus on adjusting climate conditions and evaluating different crops' performance in various production systems. Cooling efficiency is a key factor being tested. Topian's team will optimise energy and water usage through existing and new cooling technologies and radiation control. They plan to utilise NEOM's extensive photovoltaic network in the future.

Oxagon CEO Vishal Wanchoo commented: "This pilot aims to deliver, at scale, sustainably produced ingredients that NEOM residents and hospitality partners will be able to use – demonstrating an entirely localized ‘farm-to-table’ supply chain. Together with Topian, we are taking the next step in utilizing clean technology to change industry for the better."

Trials will determine which fruits and vegetables thrive best locally; taste, colour, and texture will be assessed for superior consumer satisfaction. The aim is to offer consumers fresh local produce like lettuce, tomatoes, and strawberries throughout the year. These products promise better taste and sustainability.

This initiative serves as a testing ground for other companies aiming to develop diverse products to meet global demand. The investment in high-tech facilities supports NEOM’s vision of establishing sustainable industries for the future.

International Collaboration

The construction of this significant asset was accomplished through collaboration with Van der Hoeven, a Dutch leader in horticultural technology. This partnership underscores NEOM’s commitment to creating sustainable solutions by leveraging international expertise.

The opening of these facilities marks another milestone towards achieving NEOM's vision of sustainable industrial development. By integrating advanced technology with agriculture, Topian seeks to redefine food systems not only within Saudi Arabia but also across other arid regions facing climate challenges.
