Abu Dhabi's Road Toll System Revised Effective September 1, 2025
In a significant move aimed at improving road traffic conditions, Abu Dhabi has revised its road toll system. Starting from 1 September 2025, the adjustments, initiated by the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) under the Department of Municipalities and Transport, are set to modify the toll tariffs and schedules. These changes are a part of broader efforts to alleviate congestion and foster smoother traffic flow during the busiest times of the day.
A key change in the toll schedule is the adjustment of the evening toll period, which will now cover the hours from 3pm to 7pm. However, the morning toll hours will remain from 7am to 9am, Monday to Saturday. Notably, toll charges will be waived on Sundays and public holidays, maintaining the approach to encourage off-peak travel and reduce the load on Abu Dhabi's main roads during high-traffic periods.
One of the most notable updates is the removal of the daily and monthly toll caps that were previously in place for private vehicles. Prior to these amendments, there was a maximum toll charge limit set per day at AED16 and per month at different rates (AED200, AED150, and AED100) depending on the number of vehicles owned. With the new regulations, these caps will be abolished, allowing for toll charges to accumulate without a ceiling as vehicles pass through the emirate's toll gates.
For each passage through a toll gate, a fee of AED4 will now be levied, marking a straightforward approach to toll collection. Despite these changes, the exemption policy for certain groups remains intact. Individuals such as People of Determination, low-income families, senior citizens, and retirees will continue to benefit from toll exemptions, ensuring the system remains considerate of the community's diverse needs.
The responsibility for managing and operating Abu Dhabi's updated DARB toll system will transition to Q Mobility, a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company (ADQ). This entity will coordinate closely with relevant authorities to ensure the seamless implementation of the new toll system amendments. This transition represents a strategic move to streamline operations and enhance the efficiency of toll collection in the emirate.
