Third Emirates Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant And Gene Therapy Congress Opens In Abu Dhabi

The 3rd Emirates Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) and Gene Therapy Congress commenced in Abu Dhabi, showcasing the UAE's dedication to enhancing paediatric BMT and gene therapy. This two-day event gathers 600 top specialists in paediatric hematology, oncology, and transplant medicine from 24 nations. It is organised with renowned international hospitals such as the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

This year's congress emphasises the achievements of the region's medical community. Dr. Zainul Aabideen, Consultant and Head of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and BMT at Burjeel Medical City (BMC), highlighted the UAE's progress in paediatric BMT. "We have successfully developed our bone marrow transplant capabilities since our first paediatric case in BMC in 2022," he stated.

Dr. Aabideen shared his team's success in performing bone marrow transplants for over 50 children from 18 countries, underscoring significant advancements in this field. With support from medical teams and authorities, the UAE now has the expertise to expand these capabilities locally and internationally, benefiting more patients.

Prof. Rupert Handgretinger, Prof. Emeritus at Children’s University Hospital, Germany, and Conference Co-Chair, remarked on the congress's role in fostering collaboration with global experts. "This congress not only highlights the achievements of the UAE’s healthcare sector but also fosters collaboration with global experts to share knowledge and best practices," he said.

The event features key sessions and interactive discussions on significant advancements and emerging trends in paediatric BMT and gene therapy. Topics include advances in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for treating conditions like hemoglobinopathies, immune deficiencies, and metabolic disorders.

Exploring Innovations in Gene Therapy

Experts will explore cutting-edge innovations in gene therapies during the congress. Updates on ex vivo gene therapy for hemoglobinopathies and advancements in CAR T-cell therapy for paediatric solid tumours will be discussed. These sessions aim to align scientific, regulatory, and clinical approaches to accelerate global access to therapies.

Challenges in cellular therapy and clinical trials will also be addressed. Additional sessions focus on long-term patient care management, post-transplant complications, and lessons from the global paediatric BMT community.

Recognising Research Excellence

During the congress, awards will be given to the top three research papers presented by participants. The conference aims to encourage collaboration among experts from leading hospitals across North America, Europe, and the Middle East.
