H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs, met with Bill Gates, Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, during Gates' visit to the UAE. Mariam Almheiri, Head of the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court, also attended. They discussed joint initiatives in global health and agriculture.
The meeting highlighted efforts to combat preventable diseases like polio and neglected tropical diseases. President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been a key figure in global polio eradication since 2011. His contributions include funding a crucial polio vaccination campaign in Gaza during September and October.
Sheikh Theyab and Gates explored how AI could address broader development challenges in health, education, and food systems. They also discussed achievements from COP28 initiatives supported by both the UAE and the Gates Foundation. These initiatives aim to uplift lives globally by improving health and livelihoods.
The Reaching the Last Mile Fund was a focal point of their discussion. Established by President Sheikh Mohamed in 2017, this donor collaborative targets onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis in Africa. At COP28, its funding goal expanded from US$100 million to US$500 million, aiming to eradicate these diseases across Africa.
The UAE-Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Partnership on Innovation in Agriculture was another key topic. This partnership focuses on accelerating climate action and strengthening global food systems. It supports projects using AI and technology to tackle agricultural challenges and aid farmers facing climate change impacts.
Notable investments include the CGIAR AI Hub and AgrilLLM, which explore large language models for AI-based extension services for smallholder farmers in low-and-middle-income countries. Another project is the Red Palm Weevil Consortium, which aims to reduce threats posed by red palm weevils worldwide through international collaboration.
Reflecting on their decade-long collaboration, Gates praised the UAE's commitment to improving lives globally. He acknowledged their shared dedication to addressing pressing global issues through innovative solutions and strategic partnerships.
