Eco-Friendly Development To Boost Telegraph Island As Musandam's Tourist Attraction
The Musandam governorate marked a significant milestone on Tuesday with the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the development of the historic Telegraph Island (Jazirat Maqlab), located in the wilayat of Khasab. This initiative aims to establish an eco-friendly tourism facility, reflecting a collaborative effort between the Musandam Governor's Office, Musandam Municipality, OQ Company, and the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.
Presiding over the ceremony was Sayyid Ibrahim Said al Busaidi, Governor of Musandam, signifying the project's high importance to the region. The development plans include the construction of a 731sqm multipurpose hall adjacent to a 130sqm building designated for public services. Furthermore, the project will feature a sea landing platform measuring 8×2.5m and a scenic mountain walkway to facilitate access to various parts of the island.
Additional amenities will include two photography piers offering stunning vistas of the island's key landmarks, a shaded area for relaxation, a guard room, and an infrastructure building to house electricity generators and fuel storage. These developments aim to enhance the visitor experience while preserving the island's natural beauty and historical significance.
The importance of Telegraph Island extends beyond its natural allure, as it played a pivotal role in the history of modern communications in the Middle East. Named after the submarine telegraph cable that stretched from Mumbai, India, to Basra, Iraq, the island became a crucial telegraph station in 1864. This development followed the granting of written permission to the British government by Sultan Thuwaini bin Said bin Sultan al Busaidi.
Telegraph Island's establishment as a telegraph station marked the commencement of the modern communications era in the region. Today, its rich history, combined with its unique geography, nestled among the Musandam creeks, positions it as a prime destination for tourists and adventure seekers. The ongoing development project underscores the commitment to preserving this historical gem while promoting sustainable tourism in Musandam.
