Tarshid Initiates Energy Efficiency Project In King Abdullah Medical City With Significant Annual Savings

The National Energy Services Company (Tarshid) and King Abdullah Medical City, part of the Makkah Health Cluster, have initiated a project to enhance energy efficiency in 16 city facilities. This effort follows global standards to boost energy savings and cut consumption. The project aims to significantly reduce electricity usage and carbon emissions, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030's sustainability goals.

Waleed Al-Ghreri, Tarshid's CEO and Board Member, explained that field surveys and technical studies were conducted on the buildings involved. These assessments highlighted ten crucial measures for improvement, focusing on control systems, air conditioning, and lighting. Enhancements include developing a chiller control system and scheduling air handling units for better performance.

To further optimize energy use, some cooling water pumps will be replaced with more efficient models. The building management system will also be upgraded to integrate with new cooling and air conditioning devices. These upgrades aim to increase operational efficiency across the facilities involved in the project.

The lighting systems will undergo retrofitting by replacing conventional lights with high-performance LED systems. These will be complemented by occupancy sensors and smart motion detectors to enhance energy efficiency further. Such measures are expected to contribute significantly to reducing overall electricity consumption.

The project targets an annual electricity consumption reduction from approximately 47 million kWh to about 37 million kWh. This represents an estimated annual energy saving of 23%. The savings equate to preserving over 17,000 barrels of oil equivalent each year and avoiding around 6,000 metric tons of carbon emissions.

This environmental benefit is comparable to planting over 102,000 tree seedlings annually. Such substantial reductions underscore the project's potential impact on both energy conservation and environmental protection within the region.

Tarshid's Role in Sustainability

Established in 2017, Tarshid leads as the Kingdom's primary energy services company. It supports the energy sector by promoting sustainability through integrating energy efficiency, operational improvements, and clean energy solutions.
