Tariq Abdulhakim Center Introduces World’s First Laser Qanoon In New Interactive Space

The Tariq Abdulhakim Center (TAHC) recently inaugurated its innovative engagement rooms with a two-day Engagement Festival, drawing attention to the world’s first laser qanoon housed within its museum. This unique instrument, a modern rendition of the traditional Arab zither, allows players to produce music by interrupting beams of light, offering a novel musical experience that blends heritage with technological innovation.

The festival kicked off with an array of activities and performances, including live music from talented Saudi musicians across genres, both orchestral and folk. The event also marked the debut of performances on the museum’s new rooftop terrace café. Families enjoyed a variety of fun activities such as carnival games, henna, Arabic calligraphy, face painting, and pottery making, making the festival a vibrant celebration of Saudi culture and innovation.

In a highlight of the festival set for March 8th, TAHC will showcase a piece of Saudi musical history not heard in over half a century. The "Western Region March," composed by Tariq Abdulhakim (ca 1920-2012), a pivotal figure in Saudi military music, will be performed by a marching band. This performance is part of TAHC’s mission to preserve and celebrate the rich musical heritage of Saudi Arabia.

Tariq Abdulhakim, known as the "General of Saudi Music," was instrumental in creating the first military music bands in Saudi Arabia and composed its first marches. His contributions had remained largely unexplored until recently. The Ministry of Culture’s acquisition of Abdulhakim’s vast archive for TAHC has enabled this revival, blending past and future in a memorable musical presentation.

The Engagement Festival is open to all age groups and offers free entry, though booking is required. This initiative by TAHC not only honors the legacy of Tariq Abdulhakim but also introduces audiences to innovative musical experiences that reflect the center’s dedication to cultural preservation and innovation.

For those interested in attending the second day of the Engagement Festival on Friday, March 8th, bookings can be made through the provided link: https://2u.pw/WrVZfRD. This event promises to be an enriching experience for individuals and families alike, celebrating Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage and its forward-looking embrace of new technologies in the arts.
