Taiwan Shaken By A 7.3 Magnitude Earthquake: Fatalities And Tsunami Warnings Issued

In a significant seismic event, the National Centre of Metrology's National Seismic Network recorded a 7.3 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan at 03:58 (UAE time) on Wednesday. This earthquake is noted as the most powerful to strike the island in over two decades, according to Reuters. The tremor resulted in the tragic loss of four lives, left dozens injured, and initiated tsunami warnings across southern Japan and the Philippines, which were subsequently retracted.

The epicentre was located in Hualien, a mountainous and less densely populated region of eastern Taiwan. The local government confirmed the death toll and reported over 50 individuals sustained injuries due to the quake. In terms of structural damage, at least 26 buildings were reported collapsed, with a significant number in Hualien. Despite the extensive damage, rescue operations managed to save 22 individuals from one of the severely affected buildings, with only one person reported missing.

7.3 Quake Hits Taiwan: Fatalities Reported

Following the quake, Japan's weather agency observed several minor tsunami waves hitting parts of Okinawa's southern prefecture. Although an initial tsunami warning was issued, it was later downgraded to an advisory level. The agency also revised the earthquake's magnitude to 7.7. Concurrently, the Philippines Seismology Agency advised residents in coastal areas of several provinces to move to higher ground as a precautionary measure.

Taiwan also activated a tsunami warning system but did not report any subsequent damage from potential tsunami waves. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii further confirmed that the threat of damaging tsunami waves had subsided, alleviating concerns for further immediate risk to the affected regions.

This earthquake underscores the vulnerability of certain regions to natural disasters and highlights the importance of timely and effective warning systems in mitigating potential damage and loss of life. The collaborative efforts between nations in sharing data and alerts played a crucial role in ensuring safety and preparedness amidst this natural calamity.
