Taif Roses: A Cultural And Agricultural Treasure Of Saudi Arabia With Over 960 Million Annual Blooms

The Taif rose, known for its captivating scent, is a cherished agricultural and cultural asset in Saudi Arabia. This fragrant flower represents the nation's agricultural identity. Each year, the harvest season begins in early March and lasts about 45 days, drawing rose lovers and perfume makers from both within the country and abroad.

Over 400 farms are involved in cultivating these roses, benefiting from initiatives that create jobs and marketing opportunities. This empowers rural communities by enhancing production skills and diversifying income sources. The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture supports this industry through the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program (Saudi Reef) and funding from the Agricultural Development Fund.

Efforts to support Taif rose cultivation aim to boost agricultural sustainability and strengthen the national economy. The ministry has highlighted several developmental projects facilitated by Saudi Reef. These include perfume extraction facilities, smart field schools using artificial intelligence, and tissue culture labs to improve production quality.

Taif Governorate, located in Makkah Region, is the main centre for rose cultivation. It hosts over 910 farms spread across areas like Al-Hada and Al-Shafa Mountains, Wadi Muharram, Al-Talhat, Wadi Al-A’mq, Wadi Al-Bani, Bilad Tuwairiq, and Al-Mukhada. These farms cover more than 193 hectares and produce over 960 million roses annually.

The ministry's initiatives have unlocked significant investment potential in the rose cultivation sector. By 2026, the national goal is to reach approximately two billion roses annually. These advancements contribute to food security while aligning with Vision 2030 objectives to develop the national economy.

The processing industry for Taif roses produces various derivatives such as aromatic oils, rose water, cosmetics, and body care products. These items are popular in markets due to their blend of cultural heritage and investment potential. The ministry remains committed to preserving natural resources while supporting this industry.

In addition to economic benefits, these efforts stimulate both agriculture and tourism activities in rural areas. The distinctive fragrance of Taif roses spreads throughout Saudi Arabia as a vital economic resource for the Kingdom.
