Taif's Evolution Over 120 Years: From Traditional Water Sources To A Global Leader In Water Management

Taif Governorate is known for its ancient water systems, including springs, dams, and wells. These systems highlight the region's expertise in water management. For over 120 years, Taif has developed a unique irrigation system. This system ensures water security by using advanced technologies to transport water from deep underground to the mountain peaks.

Since King Abdulaziz unified Saudi Arabia, Taif has seen significant growth. It is now a key water source and strategic reservoir in the Kingdom. The area supports a comprehensive and sustainable water system that benefits both residents and farmers.

Taif hosts some of the oldest dams, dating back to the Umayyad era. Notable structures include the Ekrimah Dam. These ancient dams have been crucial in preserving water and supporting agriculture. They also protect properties from potential damage caused by floods.

Historian Issa Al-Qasir highlighted Taif's rich history with these dams in a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). He noted that many of these structures are centuries old and continue to play an essential role in people's lives today.

Al-Qasir mentioned that Taif contains about 70 dams, many with historical inscriptions and religious dates. One dam, built before the Islamic era, features Kufic Arabic inscriptions on its stones. This dam measures 200 meters long and 10 meters wide, showcasing advanced architecture for its time.

The intricate designs on these dams reflect Taif’s deep-rooted history and cultural significance. These inscriptions provide insights into the past, offering a glimpse into the architectural prowess of ancient builders.

Modern Water Infrastructure

Today, Taif and Maysan Governorate boast over 97% coverage of water networks and large dams. This extensive network serves both residents and farmers effectively. The modern infrastructure ensures reliable water supply across these regions.
